Tennessee Counties Mandating Masks Be Worn in Public Settings

As COVID-19 cases continue to increase in the state of Tennessee, local governments are implementing mandates that require masks to be worn in public settings.

Governor Bill Lee signed an executive order Friday granting 89 counties the power to issue local mask requirements. The order does not include the state’s six counties with locally run health departments, including; Sullivan, Knox, Hamilton, Davidson, Madison, and Shelby counties.

In Nashville and Davidson County, masks must be worn. Those who violate the order could be subject to civil and criminal penalties, including a $50 fine or 30 days in jail. The mandate in Davidson County started Friday, with a few exceptions to the rule, those can be found here.

Memphis and Shelby County announced a mandate Friday afternoon that was effective immediately for anyone over the age of 12.

In Chattanooga and throughout Hamilton County, masks will be mandated beginning Friday. Mayor Jim Coppinger announced it during his Monday press conference. Non-compliance can be punished by a $50 fine or 30 days in jail.
