Governor Says Dawson Springs Church Contributed to Hopkins County COVID-19 Spread

Governor Andy Beshear used his Wednesday news conference to call out a Dawson Springs church for helping with the spread of the COVID-19 virus in Hopkins County.

The Hopkins County Health Department said they had 26 confirmed cases as of Wednesday afternoon. The governor said a church in Dawson Springs that he did not mention by name held a revival recently and as a result, the virus spread throughout the county.

Gov. Beshear said there were 93 new cases reported in the state Wednesday, with almost half of those in the Louisville and Lexington area. Eight others were in Daviess County. The governor also said there were two new deaths as a result of the virus in Hopkins and Daviess County.

Using estimates released this week by the White House, Gov. Beshear said Kentucky could see nearly 30,000 cases statewide resulting in between 1,300 and 3,200 deaths. However, he called those estimates optimistic and said the next two weeks will be a critical time in trying to decrease the spike of new cases.

Josh Benton of the Workforce Development Cabinet said 70,000 unemployment claims have been reviewed and processed in the state and says the first payments have been approved. However, he also warned people to be on the lookout for scams.

In addition to his continued call for social distancing, Gov. Beshear urged people to support their local businesses.

The governor also urged people to complete their census forms that have been mailed to their homes so that Kentucky can receive the appropriate amount of federal funding.
