Trigg School Board Approves 2020-21 Calendar

Trigg County school board members approved the academic calendar for the 2020-2021 school year during their meeting Thursday night.

Director of Personnel and Student Services James Mangels presented to the board the two calendar options on the table, with both showing school starting nearly two weeks later than normal. In the option approved by the calendar committee, there was a concern that student attendance would be low, if school was in session on December 20 and 21.

Board members unanimously approved the second calendar option, which shows students returning to class from summer break on Wednesday, August 19. Fall break will be shortened down to just two days, October 8 and 9. Thanksgiving break will be November 25 through 27 and Christmas break will start on Monday, December 21 and classes resume Monday, January 4, 2021. Spring Break will be the first full week in April 2021 and the last day of school for students will be May 21, 2021.

In addition, board members voted to allow this year’s sophomore class to take the ACT during the school day on Tuesday, March 24. Assistant Superintendent Beth Sumner says the entire class will take the test that day and it will be considerably cheaper for the Cadiz Rotary Club, who helps to pick up some of the costs of the tests for students.

Sumner notes no matter how much the Cadiz Rotary Club helps to pay, the test will still be free for students. She adds they are very appreciative of the club and all they do in their commitment to helping the students at Trigg County Public Schools.

The board also approved to spend a little over $15,000 to install false windows on the old elementary gymnasium that is being converted into classrooms. The false windows would make the window pattern on the renovated building look symmetrical.

Board member Clara Beth Hyde stated since they are spending $17-million on the project, this needs to be done.

Gayle Rufli adds the money could be spent better elsewhere.

The motion was passed by a very small margin, with Rufli and Theresa Allen voting against the motion of approving the false window change order.

The next Trigg County school board meeting will be held Thursday night, February 27 at 6:00.
