Trigg Middle And High School Vestibule Projects Tabled

No action was taken Thursday night on awarding a bid for the middle and high school vestibule projects during the Trigg County Board of Education meeting.

Senate Bill 1, which was signed by Governor Matt Bevin in March mandates schools to restrict the access to each school building by July 1, 2022. The law was enacted following a fatal shooting of two students at Marshall County High School on January 23, 2018.

Interim Superintendent Tim McGinnis notes each of the school buildings meet the requirements, but the recommendation for the vestibules came from the School Safety Taskforce last year following the shooting.

During the board meeting, Director of Operations Matt Ladd adds the bids received Wednesday came in significantly over the projected cost for both vestibules.

McGinnis says he spoke to Keith Sharp from JKS Architects & Engineers about why the bids were so far off compared to the estimate that was provided for the BG-1 that has been turned in to the Kentucky Department of Education.

He adds there are two concerns with the bids received, one being how far off the estimate was and why the bids were so far apart.

Among recommendations brought up during the discussion were to pair the vestibule projects with a bigger project (i.e. the upcoming elementary school renovation), accept individual bids for each process of the construction, or even wait until a different time of the year to ask for bids.McGinnis says no matter what they choose to do, next time they ask for bids it could come back even higher.

Board members voted to table the issue, with Gayle Rufli absent from the meeting.

In other action, members voted to approve an advertisement and recruitment information regarding the Superintendent Search that will be sent to the Kentucky School Board Association. The advertisement will begin Monday and comes following Travis Hamby’s resignation July 1 to take the same position in the Allen County School District.
