Crews Pretreating Roads For Possible Wintry Weather

In preparation for a winter weather event expected to move into the area Friday, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews plan to pre-treat highways in the twelve westernmost counties in District 1.

Spokesman Keith Todd says crews will be spraying brine with the goal of completing all 2,800 miles of highway in the district in anticipation of a snow and ice event expected to arrive Friday night that may include a substantial winter mix before converting to snow.

He indicates crews will start brine spraying activities on “C” snow and ice routes, then move to “B” routes and “A” routes. Todd notes “C” routes are completed first because they have less traffic to wear off the salt. “A” routes, which are interstates, U.S. highways, and other more heavily traveled routes, are treated last so there is less opportunity for traffic to wear off the salt residue.

Motorists need to use appropriate caution whenever you encounter spray trucks working on the roads the next two days.

While Kentucky highway crews are preparing for the approaching winter weather event, state transportation officials are encouraging drivers to do your part by checking your tire tread and putting together a winter weather travel kit for your vehicle.

District 1 includes the counties of Ballard, Calloway, Carlisle, Crittenden, Fulton, Graves, Hickman, Livingston, Lyon, Marshall, McCracken, and Trigg.
