7 Insurgents dead in Thwarted U.S. Base Attack [Follow up]
Forward Operating Base Salerno, Afghanistan (Aug. 19) – Seven insurgents are dead in an unsuccessful second attack on a U.S. base in Khowst province, Afghanistan earlier this morning.
Coalition forces positively identified a group of insurgents posturing to attack the base and engaged them with small arms fire.
Coalition helicopters also arrived on station and engaged insurgents as they attempted to flee from the scene.
Of the seven dead insurgents, six were armed with suicide vests. Three insurgents died by detonating their suicide vests. Coalition forces killed another three suicide bombers prior to suicide vest detonation.
There were no ISAF casualties in the failed attack.

Coalition forces successfully interdicted the insurgent attack approximately 1,000 meters outside of the base perimeter.
Additionally, Afghan security forces in Khowst detained the alleged driver of a second vehicle-borne IED in yesterday’s failed attack on the base.
Today’s attack follows an attempted multiple vehicle-borne IED attack on the base yesterday, where insurgents detonated a
vehicle-borne IED outside the perimeter of the base, killing 10
Afghans and wounding another 13. Afghan security forces identified and stopped a second VBIED just outside the base and performed a controlled detonation on it, preventing additional casualties.
