Every year after the running of the Kentucky Derby there is the hope for a Triple Crown winner, this year, after the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby, that hope will lie with California Chrome. California Chrome got a good break out of the gate in the crowded field of 19 horses, and then pulled away down the stretch for an impressive win.
With California Chrome being the 5-2 favorite going to the post, and with his impressive finish, the talk about a Triple Crown winner will now begin to build, leading up to the Preakness in two weeks. California Chrome becomes the first California bred horse to win the Derby since 1962.
California Chrome stretched his winning streak to five races, and Art Sherman became the oldest winning Derby trainer at the age of 77. The race was run in front of 164,906 people, the second largest crowd in Kentucky Derby history. Commanding Curve finished second and Danza finished third.
