Business Spotlight - Broadbent Foods & Gifts

Broadbent Foods & Gifts

A desire to produce a country ham as close to the original methods used was the main goal of forming B & B Food Products. Smith Broadbent’s grandfather “Cap’n” was instrumental in giving a solid start to what was to put Trigg County on the map.

Passing on his well-defined processes to his son Smith Broadbent Jr, Cap’n would not realize how far it
would proceed during his son’s lifetime.  Recipients of Hams from the original smokehouse urged Smith Broadbent Jr to provide ham commercially to
enable all to enjoy this southern delicacy.

When his son, Smith Broadbent III, received his master’s degree in meat production from the University of Kentucky, the family dream
became a reality. In 1963, B & B Food Products was founded. The company became one of the first to produce & ship country hams throughout the world.

The Trigg County Ham Festival came into existence because of the number of local farmers who had mastered the art of curing hams.  In 1977, this celebration festival became a way for locals & visitors to remember this time honored process. Smith Broadbent III in 1984 made “The World’s Largest Biscuit” come to fruition. The first Trigg County biscuit acknowledgment by Guinness Book of World Records was 10 1/2 scrumptious feet in diameter.

In 1988, Smith Broadbent III & his wife Katie, decided to open a much needed gift shop. Cadiz & Trigg county embraced Broadbent Foods & Gifts. Not only to provide a larger retail outlet for the country meat business, but to offer a much needed shopping experience for locals and visitors of Trigg County.

Katie prides herself for providing employment opportunities for over 300 people from Trigg and surrounding counties. Many times she has employed multiple generations within a family. On site participation in the “Ham Festival” has been our number one focus at Ham Festival time. However, throughout the years we have had various activities to celebrate this event.

For 2013, we are eagerly anticipating our first custom “Ham Festival” T-shirts & Tervis Tumblers which will commemorate the festival and the legacy of the country ham.  We will be in Booth 79 Section E with these products and our amazing silicone lids. If you haven’t witnessed these lids, you must come by our booth to see them demonstrated.

Another reason to stop by our booth is to receive a 25% off coupon to use in our retail store during the festival. Our annual 50% off Porch Sale will be in progress along with other in store discounts. Make Broadbent’s booth and store a must-stop during the 37th annual Trigg County Ham Festival.
