Date Announced For Mayor's Unity Breakfast

Hopkinsville Mayor Dan Kemp has announced the date for this year's Unity Breakfast. The Mayor invites all interested people to attend the event, which will take place Thursday, October 24, from 7:30am until 8:45am, at the Christian County Senior Center. The Unity Breakfast is held in October each year in conjunction with the annual Human Relations Week. Among the highlights of the event is the presentation of the Hal and Bettye Thurmond Award. The award is given to an individual or group which has shown outstanding dedication to the improvement of human relations in the area.

The award is named for Hal Thurmond and his wife, Bettye, whose work to integrate housing, lunch counters and public schools and to improve race relations in Christian County in the 1950’s and 60’s earned them a posthumous induction into the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame in 2006.

Individual tickets are $10.00, or table for eight sponsorship, which is $80.00, can be purchased at the Lackey Municipal Building in the Human Relations Commission, or the Mayor’s office, or from any member of the Hopkinsville Human Relations Commission. Those who would like additional information, or to reserve tickets or tables, can call 270-890-0200.
