Fallen Currahee Honored With Remembrance Ceremony

Wednesday was a day to honor and remember fallen heroes and Fort Campbell took the opportunity to recognize one of their own as part of the Eagle Remembrance Ceremony. 101st Airborne Division Acting Senior Commander, Brigadier General Mark Stammer says though Staff Sergeant Sonny Zimmerman could have stayed behind and left the army, he chose to go to Afghanistan with the Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team.

Zimmerman had less than a year left in the army, but could not fathom sending his men and staying behind. He died July 16 of wounds caused by a rocket-propelled grenade.

General Stammer says there is comfort in knowing Zimmerman was doing what he loved.

Fort Campbell also took time to recognize the heroes of 9/11 with a moment of silence.

The ceremony was held at McAuliffe Hall and attended by over 100 soldiers and community leaders.
