First District Congressman Ed Whitfield and other Congressional members are working hard to stop the Army Corps of Engineers from implementing the proposed barriers around dams on the Cumberland River. During an interview Wednesday morning with the News Edge, Congressman Whitfield talked about the reasons for placing the buffers.
Federal, state and local representatives are clear the barriers would hurt not only fishing on the river, which includes the Lake Barkley Lock and Dam, but it would hurt tourism. Congressman Whitfield and others, including Senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul, are supporting the Freedom to Fish Act.
A Freedom to Fish Act rally will be held April 13 at the Barkley Dam Pavilion at 11:00am. Congressman Whitfield, Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Lyon County Judge Executive Wade White and Livingston County Judge Executive Chris Lasher are all expected to speak at the event.
