Kentucky Ag Commissioner James Comer is expressing his displeasure, as legislation that would allow hemp farming in Kentucky failed to make it to a vote in a House committee Wednesday. Tom McKee, a Democrat from Cynthiana, and the Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, closed the meeting after two hours of discussion, but did not allow a vote, claiming another committee needed the meeting room.
McKee wants to have the University of Kentucky study the issue and grow a test crop. Ag Commissioner Comer stands in opposition to that proposal. An attempt by Representative Jim DeCesare, of Rockfield, to have a vote on allowing hemp farming under Comer’s plan was ruled out of order by McKee.
A plan to reconvene Wednesday afternoon failed to materialize as McKee called a meeting at his desk in the House Chamber instead. McKee is giving no indication as to whether or not his committee would actually vote on the bill.
