Under a bill approved by a State House committee Tuesday, counties could do away with the office of constable. The House Committee on Elections, Constitutional Amendments and Intergovernmental Affairs approved a bill that would amend the state's constitution to allow counties to eliminate the office of constable, which the constitution established back in 1850.
Constables, who are elected, have the same law enforcement powers as sheriffs but lack the same training requirements. A report issued in 2012 said constables are outdated. Supporters of the legislation cite examples of rogue constables taking their law enforcement powers too far.
