Governor Steve Beshear could get a 5th year in his second term if legislation approved Monday by the State Senate becomes state law. The Senate approved a constitutional amendment Monday to hold the election of Governor and other elected constitutional officials in even numbered years, beginning in 2016.
The measure passed the Senate 25-12, primarily along party lines. Twenty-three votes, in the State Senate, are necessary to pass a constitutional amendment. Sponsors of the bill say it would save the state 1.4-million dollars, and increase voter participation in elections for Governor, by having them the same years as elections for President.
