Officials To Discuss Dam Conflict In Washington

Lyon and Livingston County Judge Executives Wade White and Chris Lasher will be in Washington, DC, Tuesday to discuss the proposed closure of the areas below and above Barkley Dam.
The Judge Executives are scheduled to meet with Army Corps of Engineers General Michael Walsh to ask him to alter the agency's plan to erect barricades to close the head and tailwaters near Barkley and nine other dams in Kentucky and Tennessee. The regulations will be enforced by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, who is ironically opposed to the idea.
First District Congressman Ed Whitfield is scheduled to join Judges White and Lasher for the meeting, with invitations also extended to Senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul.
The corps is saying they are closing the waters based on safety concerns. Local tourism officials say closing the areas below and above the dam could significantly impact tourism revenue in Lyon and Livingston Counties.
