Staff Meteorologist David Bryant continues to keep his eye on an approaching winter weather system. Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for freezing rain and sleet, which is in effect from 2 am to 9 am Friday for much of western Kentucky south of a line from Paducah to Calhoun.
Freezing rain, mainly light, and possibly sleet are forecast to develop late tonight and continue through early to mid morning Friday. A glaze and possibly minor accumulation of sleet may result in very hazardous travel conditions during the morning commute to work and school.
Some area roads have already been treated, or will be before the event begins. However, given the precipitation will start mostly as liquid and at night, we may still see hazardous conditions develop, especially on secondary and lesser traveled roads. The good news is that temperatures will rise rapidly to above freezing through midday Friday, thus the early morning wintry precipitation will melt fairly quickly.
