Since it began, the Hopkinsville-Christian County Crime Stoppers program has put a dent in criminal activity in the area. According to information from the Hopkinsville Police Department, Crime Stoppers is approaching its 1,200th cash reward payout in the 28-year history of the program.
During its first year, back in 1985, Crime Stoppers payed out a total of seven cash rewards, for a total of $1,050. In its 28th year, in 2012, the program payed out sixty cash rewards, for a total of $10,300. Crime Stoppers received 261 tips and assisted local law enforcement in arresting 76 individuals in 2012.
Public Information Officer Paul Ray points out that the program exists thanks to monetary donations from citizens and businesses of Hopkinsville and Christian County. In the 28-years, Crime Stoppers has payed out 1,195 rewards, and more than $220,000 in reward money.
