While legislators in Frankfort are considering the possibility of a statewide smoking ban, a coalition of health care groups is conducting an advertising campaign that urges Kentucky to go smoke free.
The Smoke-Free Kentucky Coalition, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation are spending more than 90,000-dollars to contrast Kentucky's top ranking in basketball, horse racing, smoking, and lung cancer.
The groups say Kentucky needs a statewide ban on smoking. On Wednesday, House Speaker Greg Stumbo said he would support such a proposal. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 29-percent of Kentucky adults smoke.
