The Jeffers Bend Environmental Center and Botanical Gardens steering committee held their annual retreat and planning meeting Saturday to review the past year's successes and look ahead to 2013. Charles Turner, Volunteer Director, says much was accomplished in 2012 with work done at the facility by volunteer groups. It began last February with 45 soldiers from Fort Campbell.
Jeffers Bend, a 38 acre facility on property owned by the Hopkinsville Water Environment Authority, is utilized through out the year by school groups from Christian and surrounding counties.
In 2012, there were approximately 800 students who attended Jeffers Bend. There are almost one thousand scheduled for attendance in 2013. The facility is host to four major events during the year, but Mark Withers, Chairman of the Steering Committee, says the bend can be used everday by individuals during daylight hours.
Funding for Jeffers Bend is through several fund raisers during the year and with private donations. Withers says there is a great need for qualified volunters that can assist with the programs. Even though the facility is operated with all non- paid personell, Withers says there are moments that make it all worth while.
Jeffers Bend is located in Hopkinsville just off 41 North on Metcalf Lane.
