Claims Filed Against Foss Maritime Made Public

State officials have filed a claim seeking 7.1-million dollars in damages from Foss Maritime, the shipping company that operated the cargo ship Delta Mariner, which struck the Eggners Ferry Bridge in January of last year, causing a span of the bridge to collapse. Chuck Wolfe with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the claim filed December 4th, in U.S. District Court, in Paducah, clearly states where the Cabinet stands.

Wolfe says the claim refutes accusasions from Foss Maritime that Kentucky is at fault for the Delta Mariner's collision with the Eggners Ferry Bridge, specifically that lights on the bridge were to blame.

Wolfe says the Cabinet wants to assure Kentucky's taxpayers that they will do everything possible to recover the money spent fixing the bridge.

The filing made Thursday by Foss Maritime asked a federal judge to rule that Foss was not responsible for causing the bridge collapse. Suzanne Lagoni with Foss Maritime says this is just a part of the limited liability process.

The claim from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is the largest among more than 7.2-million dollars in damages being sought by businesses and residents near the site of the incident.

Among the others to file claims, BellSouth filed a damages claim for 59,000-dollars, and the owners of the Brass Lantern filed a claim for more than $33,000. In addition to the State and business, three local residents also filed claims for travel expenses and emotional damages.
