Mine Fatals Down During 2012

Mine fatalities were down significantly in Kentucky during 2012. The number of coal miners killed on the job dropped to four, which was down from eight in 2011. Officials with the Kentucky Coal Association say progress is being made in protecting miners, but there is still work to be done.

Nationwide, 19 coal miners were killed in 2012, the second lowest total since records began more than a century ago. West Virginia led the nation in 2012 with seven coal fatalities. Kentucky was second. Alabama was third with two. Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia each had one fatality.
