Four Killed In Rockcastle Road Accident

Four Trigg County residents including three teenagers are dead after the Toyota passenger van in which they were riding slammed into a large farm tractor pulling a disk Saturday morning on Rockcastle Road. The accident occurred about 8 o'clock, on Kentucky highway 274, one mile off US-68 west, near the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. All four were pronounced dead at the scene.

Trigg County Coroner John Mark Vinson identified the victims late Saturday afternoon as 30-year old David Shoaf of Cadiz, the driver; and 18-year old Kimberly Shafer, 17-year old Lindsey Sholar, and 19-year old Dalton McDougall, all of Cadiz.

A fifth passenger in the van, 18-year old Brendon Breen, of Cadiz, was treated and released at Trigg County Hospital in stable condition. State Police said Breen was the only person in the van wearing a seat belt.

Kentucky State Trooper Billy Over told the News Edge at the scene that the reason for the collision is unknown and is still under investigation, including whether weather was a factor.

Officials at the scene made a decision to remove the van from the site and take it to an undisclosed location, where the bodies were recovered. It was then moved to State Police headquarters in Mayfield until the investigation is complete.

Rockcastle Road was shut down for over five hours for the investigation, as well as for the 9300 John Deere tractor to be removed, as the impact separated the front wheels from the tractor and knocked them over 150 feet away, where they came to rest in front of a residence. The tractor was owned by Vinson Farms, and driven by 58-year old Carl Calhoun, a 39-year farm employee who was not injured. Officials said Calhoun attempted to avoid the collision when he saw the van coming toward him, but was unable to do so.

Meanwhile, Trigg County Dispatch confirms that the van involved in the accident was reported missing this morning at 9:33. The van's owner, John White of 58 American Legion Road, told dispatch that it became missing sometime between midnight Friday night and 9:33 Saturday morning.
