Even though he sees the benefit to the state's agriculture industry, Kentucky State Police Commissioner Rodney Brewer says his agency is opposed to the production of industrial hemp in Kentucky. After a meeting Friday of the Kentucky Hemp Commission, Brewer said that state police are concerned the agricultural pluses will be offset by law enforcement minuses, such as distinguishing between hemp and marijuana.
The Commission, which is led by Agriculture Commissioner James Comer, held its second meeting Friday. The Commission is considering draft legislation for the 2013 session of the Kentucky General Assembly that would include requiring local sheriffs to monitor hemp fields.
