Senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul have urged Governor Beshear to request a federal disaster declaration due to the potential economic consequences of the drought conditions that have led to low water levels on the Mississippi River.
In a letter to the Governor, McConnell and Paul said that commercial traffic on the river could come to a complete stop in the days ahead, unless the Corps of Engineers takes action to increase the water flow. The Senators also described the diminishing water levels on the river as a looming crisis that could significantly impact Kentucky's shipping, agriculture and manufacturing sectors.
