Low water levels on the Mississippi River have resulted in restrictions being placed on vehicles that can use the Dorena-Hickman Ferry. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has announced that commercial trucks aren't being allowed on the ferry that is the only direct route between Kentucky and Missouri.
The restriction means a detour of as much as 80 miles for vehicles traveling between the two states. The ferry is allowing passenger vehicles and small utility trucks, but not commercial trucks or larger vehicles. The cabinet says the water level at Cairo, Illinois was 8 feet Thursday morning, and the ferry won't accept the larger vehicles until it reaches about 13 feet.
