One local grocery store owner says she was saddened to hear of the closing of Hostess Brands, the maker of Twinkies, Wonder Bread, Ding Dongs and other popular products. Hancock's Neighborhood Market owner Mallory Lawrence says the most shocking news is the loss of 18,500 jobs, adding she has noticed the company struggling recently.
Lawrence says Hancock's received a delivery Thursday, which will probably be the last.
Lawrence adds she has plenty of Hostess Brand products in the store, but doesn't think the items will last long.
The announcement made late Thursday to employees, and to the public on Friday, means Hostess Brands will close 33 bakeries, 565 distribution centers and 570 bakery outlet stores across the nation. The decision to liquidate the company's assets comes after a bankruptcy filing in 2004 and a second bankruptcy filing earlier this year. The decision to close followed a nationwide strike that Hostess said severely constrained the company's operation.
