The Kentucky State Police are investigating the death of a Christian County Detention Center inmate. Just before 2:30pm November 3rd, KSP was called to Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville after reports that a patient at the emergency room had shot himself.
Police say the investigation revealed that the patient was 40-year-old Jeffery Downs, an inmate at the Christian County Detention Center. Downs had been transported to Jennie Stuart Medical Center around 12:00pm Saturday for unrelated medical attention.
As Downs was in the process of being treated by medical staff, he reportedly disarmed the deputy jailer who had escorted him to the emergency room from the jail. Troopers say moments after disarming the deputy jailer, Downs turned the gun on himself resulting in a fatal injury.
Neither the deputy jailer nor the hospital staff sustained injury during the incident. Downs had been incarcerated for parole violations. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday in Louisville.
