Hopkinsville City Council: No Vote On Smoking Ban Yet

The Hopkinsville City Council is hoping to have all twelve members in attendance at the October 2nd meeting where they will vote on the smoking ordinance, after postponing the vote Tuesday night.

Councilman Paul Henson acknowledged Marby Schlegel’s absence with a motion to postpone the official vote on the proposed smoking ordinance.

Councilman Charlie Henderson stood on the other side of the fence saying the vote needed to happen.

In response, Henson said it would only be fair to postpone the vote.

Councilwoman Peggy Rogers Everett reminded fellow members it is about doing what is right for the city.

Council voted 6 to 5 to postpone the smoking ordinance vote until the October 2nd regular meeting, with Council members Henderson, Everett, Phillip Brooks, Don Ahart and Kim McCarley voting no.  This vote does follow the August committee of the whole vote during which Brooks was absent for work related reasons.

The council’s vote followed several public comments with citizens urging them to do the right thing, which varied depending on their particular side of the issue.

Josh Arnold asked the council to strongly consider voluntary status for smoke free businesses.

Russell Fleming also offered his support in allowing businesses to choose their own restrictions.

While, independent Ward 7 candidate, William Joe Everett asked the council to vote in support of Mayor Dan Kemp’s originally ban.

James E Bruce Convention Center Executive Director Mark Stevens, as president of the Pennyrile Area Hospitality Association, asked the council to pass the ban as well.

In other council business, members voted to appoint SonJanita Jordan to the Dilapidated Structure Hearing Panel to fill the unexpired term of Michael Venable.
