Cabinet Changing Review Methods
The Cabinet for Health and Family Services is changing how it reviews the deaths of children from abuse or neglect. According to reports Saturday, the changes at the Cabinet come after a December analysis by the Lexington Herald-Leader that found inconsistency among the reviews, which are required in cases where state social workers were involved with the families.
That analysis found that some workers issued detailed recommendations about what could have been done better to prevent the death. On the other hand, there were workers who turned in single-page reviews that lacked basic information. And, in a few cases, no reviews were completed.
Teresa James, acting commissioner of the Department for Community Based Services, said the agency now has a standard form for reviews, and recommendations will require action plans to ensure they are followed.
