A Tennessee woman remains hospitalized in critical condition at Vanderbilt Medical Center following a single vehicle accident Saturday afternoon on I-24, just west of the intersection with the Pennyrile Parkway, near the 79-mile marker. Officials at Vanderbilt Medical Center told the News Edge that 24-year old Stacey Gonzelman, of Knoxville, was in critical but stable condition, and underwent surgery Wednesday morning.
The News Edge spoke with Trooper Michael Dennis on the scene the day of the accident.
Both 25-year old Andrew Fleming, of Overland Park, Kansas, and Gonzelman, of Knoxville, Tennessee, were flown from the scene by Life Flight to Vanderbilt Medical Center.
According to the report, Fleming was westbound, when he lost control of his vehicle, and veered into the median. The vehicle traveled about 393-feet in the median, before going airborne, and overturning end over end several times, coming to rest upright in the median. Gonzelman was ejected as a result of the accident. Officials at Vanderbilt Medical Center say Fleming has since been released from the hospital, while Gonzelman remains in critical condition.
Westbound traffic was completely shut down immediately following the accident, while eastbound traffic was restricted to one lane. Traffic flow returned to normal about an hour after the accident, which occurred around 12:33pm.
