Both eastbound lanes of I-24, about a mile west of the Gracey-Newstead exit, were closed for more than four hours Thursday morning, following a tractor trailer accident near the 72-mile marker. State Police say 47-year old Paul Jenkins, of Lakeland, Florida was eastbound, around 6:09am Thursday, when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel.
The truck, which was carrying cooking oil drifted into the median. Jenkins attempted to drive the rig back onto the road but was unsuccessful, and the truck overturned on the roadway blocking both eastbound lanes of travel, including both shoulders. One eastbound lane was reopened around 10:30am, with both lanes finally cleared around 2:30pm. Jenkins was transported to Trigg County Hospital where he was treated and released.
