Trigg County Observes ‘National Day Of Prayer’

Celebrating the “National Day of Prayer” at the entrance of the Trigg County Judicial Center, local pastors and dignitaries gathered Thursday and used their lunch hour as a time of respect and reflection, offering thanks to God while asking for wisdom, guidance, protection and easing of the world’s troubles.

Among his words, Little River Baptist Association Director of Missions Bro. Bobby Sellers sought comfort for the nation’s political leadership — embattled by divisiveness and consternation.

City Clerk Barbie Johnson turned to the history of the nation’s forefathers, citing first US President George Washington’s words about prayer.

She wasn’t the only one to lean on the country’s history of prayer.

Oak Grove Baptist Church Pastor Bro. Nicholas Clark spoke of Peter Marshall, who in 1947 served as the chaplain for the United States Senate.

Then the pastor for the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, Clark recited a prayer Marshall once used inside the Senate’s chambers.

Clark also turned to the storied history of Jeremy Lanphier, who in 1857 — in the streets of New York City — began what historians have come to call “The Great Revival,” which led to a nation-wide call for prayer in communities.

By 1859, just two years before the American Civil War, many municipalities had turned to a prayer hour in their cities. Clark noted it was the very same thing happening Thursday in downtown Cadiz.

Judge-Executive Hollis Alexander asked for “worldly prayer,” particularly regarding the situation in Ukraine.

Maple Grove Baptist Church Pastor Bro. Mike Rust gave thanks for the open and fair opportunity for prayer in the community.

Locust Grove Baptist Church Pastor Bro. Tim Smith offered that while Trigg County might not be “worldly,” its people did have reach.

Bro. Matt Shown, of Crossroads Fellowship, turned his words toward the nation’s Armed Forces out in service.

It’s the first time in nearly three years Trigg County had held its “National Day of Prayer” in person.
