UPDATE: Kentucky State Police say 24 people -- 21 students and four adults -- were injured when the school bus they riding in overturned on U.S. 60 today.
State Trooper Richie Wright said the crash occurred around 4:42pm just east of Smithland. Wright said the bus ran off the right side of the road, causing the driver to overcorrect. The bus rotated 180 degrees and overturned in a ditch.
Ambulances from Livingston, Marshall, McCracken, and Trigg counties assisted in taking the injured people to hospitals in Smithland and Paducah. One person was flown to a Paducah hospital because there were no ground ambulances available. Wright said none of the injuries were expected to be life-threatening.
The bus was carrying the Union County High School softball team to their 5:30 contest at Livingston Central High School.
Trooper Wright said the investigation is continuing with interviews with those on the bus progressing. He said some of the students had to be extracated from the bus by mechanical means.
