Saturday Accident Leads To Charges

A Hopkinsville man, along with the woman who loaned him her vehicle, face charges following a single vehicle accident Saturday. According to Hopkinsville Police, 25-year old Shawn Gilkey was westbound on Moores Drive, when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree.

Gilkey then fled the scene following the crash. Witnesses told police they had seen him throw cans of beer and then flee in the direction of Greenville Road. Hopkinsville Police say the vehicle was owned by 38-year old Peggy Thomas, who told police she had allowed Gilkey to drive her vehicle. She also advised police as to where Gilkey could be located.

When police located Gilkey, he was then transported to Jennie Stuart Medical Center, and then later flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center, where he was treated for a fractured eye socket and then released.

Gilkey was cited on charges of 3rd Offense of DUI, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, and Driving on a Suspended License, while Thomas was cited for allowing someone under the influence to drive her vehicle and allowing an unlicensed driver to operate her vehicle. The accident occurred around 6:30pm Saturday.
