Recently, a lady whose mother had hospice, shared that in the last month or so of her mother’s life, she found and shared some of the most intense, life changing, exciting moments. She recalled how her mother and father, having been married some 50-plus years, shared some very intimate moving moments while holding hands and recalling some of life’s favorite events. It was a time to review the funny things, the successes in their life, and those of the family. It was a time to bring it all together and relive them as a family. This was not time to stop living, but to live and relive the most valuable experiences that one has had with those they love the most. It was a time to pass on to those around them even more of their family heritage, that in turn would help shape the lives of the younger ones in the family. Hospice is about being the avenue to allow folks to share those moments, so that even as the last breath is taken, the life of that person continues on forever with those that remain.
Even for those lost in the difficult world of Alzheimer’s or dementia, it is time to live and make the attempt to connect with them through music. Helping them be soothed, or reconnect to many memories through music. We have seen patients that were unable to speak still respond to music that was a part of their life either growing up in the church or music that they had listened to on the radio. In one instance a man and wife that had sung karaoke together were able to again sing some of the songs like they used to do, even though her mind had been taken over by Alzheimer’s. She could not connect anymore to her husband and he could not reach the woman that had been his wife. However through music, they were able to share some more of life together. Through the music therapy program they made a DVD together of their love songs. It became a lasting memorial of their life together. To this day, long after the love of his life has passed, he still has this DVD as a sign of their love for one another.
Hospice is about life. This month as we celebrate National Hospice Month, remember to take the time to celebrate the lives of those both past and present. Let’s live life to its fullest no matter what our days hold. We are here as life coaches to assist all those in their last months to live life to the fullest, and pass love onto those being left.
