One person is dead following an early morning fire in Clarksville. According to information from the Clarksville Police Department, Officer Gary Mefford was on a traffic stop on Providence Boulevard, around 1:50am Monday, when he spotted flames coming from a house on Cave Street.
Initially, there was only thought to be the one man in the house, however, it was discovered there was another man inside. But at that point the house was fully engulfed. When firefighters made entry into the home, they found a man in his late 20's deceased inside.
Firefighters battled the blaze until after 6 am, as the fire continued to reignite and there were numerous hotspots inside. The name of the deceased victim has not been released pending the notification of next of kin.
Officer Mefford notified dispatch and several officers responded to the scene of the fire at 197 Cave Street. When officers arrived, they began beating on the doors trying to make contact with anyone inside. Police say they saw a man inside one of the only rooms which was not on fire. They beat on the doors, broke out a window, and were finally able to wake up 50-year old Matias Hernandez-Castellano, who seemed unaware that the house was on fire. Police pulled out a wall air conditioning unit, broke another window, and pulled Castellano to safety.
