Nine Killed In Muhlenberg County Fire

A mother and eight of her nine children are dead, and her husband and the other child are injured as the result of a Muhlenberg County house fire Thursday morning that State Police say appears to have been started by a baseboard heater. State Police identify the dead as 35-year old Larae "Nikki" Watson, and her children, 15-year old Madison, 14-year old Kaitlyn, 13-year old Morgan, 9-year old Emily, 8-year old Samuel, 6-year old Raegan, and 4-year old twins, Mark and Nathaniel. Police say they will likely have to use dental records to identify the eight children and their mother.

The father, 36-year old Chad Watson, and a daughter, 11-year old Kylie, were flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, for treatment of the burns they suffered as a result of the blaze.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Stu Recke spoke to the News Edge on the scene and says the fire broke out around 2am Thursday morning on Motes Lane with emergency officials able to arrive on the scene quickly.

Recke says investigators have determined that the fire started from an electric heater.

Muhlenberg County Fire Department Information Officer Malcolm West says there are several banks in the area that will be setting up relief funds to help the family.

Recke says several law enforcement and emergency departments from around the area came to fight the fire and help in the investigation.

The News Edge will continue to follow this story and have the latest information as it becomes available.
