Kiwanis Rotary Mayoral Debate

Two of the candidates running for Mayor of Hopkinsville took advantage of the stage Thursday afternoon at a joint meeting of the Hopkinsville Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs to set forth their platform, in the first debate of the election season. Democratic candidate for Mayor, Willie Kendrick, and Republican candidate Carter Hendricks sparred at the Hopkinsville War Memorial building in front of a packed house. Right out of the gate Hendricks took a swing at his opponents who were absent.

Former State Senator, and Democratic candidate, Joey Pendleton was reportedly out of town and Republican candidate Jason McCraw was invited, but not in attendance. Kendrick says he believes he has the leadership skills needed to be Mayor.

Hendricks says he has the benefit of studying and teaching leadership skills, and looks forward to applying that knowledge.

Both candidates talked about the importance of Fort Campbell to the community, with Hendricks saying he is dedicated to a solid relationship with the base.

Kendrick says the city needs to be more proactive in drawing soldiers to Hopkinsville.

Kendrick says he's excited about the progress in downtown, and hopes the new municipal building will spur more growth.

Hendricks told the crowd that education is the highest priority to him because it affects so many other aspects of life.

Kendrick says education is also important to him because of it's effects on the inner city.

Thursday's event is just the first Mayoral debate of the year. The League of Women Voters will hold their mayoral forum April 14th.
