Greg Leath
Greg was born in Detroit, Michigan, only a few years…well, okay, a long time ago. Sometimes referred to as the “Wayne County Accident” by his siblings, (Greg’s mom was 46 when he was born), Greg only lived in Michigan until he was about 5, at which time his parents moved back to west Kentucky, returning to their roots after going north to find work when times were bad. Greg still has a couple of sisters (5 siblings in all, 2 brothers and 3 sisters) that live most of the year in the Detroit area, which would explain his unnatural fondness for the Tigers and Lions.
After growing up in Graves County, KY, and graduating from Farmington High School (home of former UK Wildcat & NBA All-Star Game Most-Valuable-Player Adrian “Odie” Smith), Greg attended Murray State and finished with a degree in communications and later a teacher certification. However, the love of radio kept calling. His “career” in broadcasting started at the Murray State campus station, part-time work at an AM radio station in Mayfield, KY, then onto his first full-time job at the station in Benton, KY. That’s where the paths of Greg and Bill (Booth) first crossed. And even though Greg showed more promise in broadcasting than Bill (at least the way Greg remembers it), the two became fast friends, sharing in their joy of radio, good food and love of the St. Louis Cardinals. (Bill Booth just pretends to be a Cubs’ fan)
Later Greg would move to a station in the far north (Metropolis, IL) and spend a few years there before realizing Kentucky was the best place to be and set out for Cadiz and WKDZ. Some of his fondest radio memories are the times spent broadcasting Trigg County basketball games and watching the exploits of players like Scott Sivills, Chris Radford and Stephanie Humphries. He became friends with coaches, Mike Wright and George Radford, and countless others in the always friendly community. Greg enjoyed taking part in the Thomas-Bridges reunion, coaching softball at the Trigg Recreation Complex and discovering why so many people make it a routine gathering place. It was Greg who hired a young Scott Brown, then a student at Trigg County High School, with a head full of sports knowledge of not only Trigg County but on just about everything. Greg enjoyed taking part in the Ham Festivals and wondering “where in the world did all these people come from.” He is now on his second tour with WKDZ after several years sabatical.
After leaving Cadiz, Greg would work at several stations along the way, but always with a deep down love for country music. Especially the artists who helped make country music great. People like Waylon & Willie, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Gene Watson, the Hag & the Possum, Miss Loretta and countless others.
Along with his love of country music, Greg enjoys following the UK Wildcats, St. Louis Cardinals and the Murray State Racer basketball team. And he especially enjoys spending time with the three most precious things in his life, his children, Sam, Jack & Jenna. And he feels very fortunate and thankful to be your host each weekday evening on 106.5 WKDZ.
