February Outlook

After having computer issues, I am finally updating this blog. The number one question on everyone’s mind is if we are going to get any snow to speak of this year. We just can’t seem to get things to come together.

But, I’m not giving up just yet. The groundhog may or may not have seen his shadow by the time you read this. But it is looking more and more like this weekend will be more of a rain event. It will depend on the timing more than anything. The system looks like it will speed up and move through faster than originally thought. This means two things. One, it could come through Saturday night while the cold air is still in place and start out as snow.

Two, the speed it moves will reduce snow amounts considerably. By Sunday morning, everything changes to rain as warm air works its way in. So the way it looks now, the time frame for a chance of some wintry weather looks to be from around midnight Saturday night through 8am Sunday. But keep in mind, nothing is certain and these things this time of year can lead to surprises. After that, the next storms to affect our area is one I have talked about for a couple of weeks. One, possibly two back to back storms arrive on Tuesday the 7th and lasts through Thursday the 9th.

The question is if there will be one system or two. If there are two, will they be back to back or will the second storm be delayed a bit. The overall thought is for our area to warm up and winds to increase as the systems approach. With warm air in place, rain and thunderstorms will likely breakout and a few storms could become severe. Once the first storm system passes by, colder air wraps in behind it with rain going over to snow. Usually, this doesn’t amount to much. Having said that, if a second storm system does form behind the first and with colder air wrapping into the region, we could see a reasonably decent snowfall. But all this is a good ways out and as you know, nothing is certain.

I am just giving you the possibilities. The overall problem this year is that there just hasn’t been any blocking to speak of to hold the colder air in place. If you had told me in November that we wouldn’t have had any snow at this point in the season, I would have laughed. I guess it goes to show how man has no real say in what the weather does. My record has been very good on pinpointing the dates of when storms come in, but I have been terrible at predicting snow with those storms. I will say that another storm shows up around the 13th or 14th but there isn’t any way to say if it will be snow or not. Yet the models still want to indicate a wintry look to February. There is some evidence that the polar vortex will get involved in bringing much colder air into the region by mid-month.  I’m not sure I’m buying into that at this point just yet.

But us snow lovers can still hope and there is still time to get a good snowfall in before spring arrives. The other thing that troubles me is the approaching severe season. Already this year, 20 lives have been lost due to tornadoes and severe weather. This does not bode well for our spring severe season, especially if the back and forth battle between the warmth and cold air masses continues. So just be prepared.
