A Fort Campbell soldier, who gave his life to save the lives of 12 Afghan soldiers, is being honored with the nation's second highest honor. The family of Staff Sergeant Eric Shaw was presented a Distinguished Service Cross on his behalf Wednesday at the Liberty Chapel. US Army Forces Command, General David Rodriguez joined Major General James McConville to present his wife, Audrey Shaw, and his mother, Michelle Campbell, with the awards.
The citation, read by the Voice of the Eagles Sergeant Chris Parker, details the events of June 27, 2010.
Shaw's wife, Audrey, says her husband was a humble man, who would have shied away from a day like this.
The Distinguished Service Cross is second only to the Medal of Honor when talking about military service awards and is handed out for extreme gallantry and risk of life in actual combat with an armed enemy force.
