Trigg County Coroner John Mark Vinson is confirming the driver of a van involved in the December 8th fatal collision on Rockcastle Road was under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Vinson told the News Edge toxicology tests showed the driver of the van 30-year old David Shoaf, of Cadiz, was under the influence of more than one substance.
Vinson says, specifically, there were three types of illegal drugs detected in Shoaf's blood stream.
Vinson added the toxicology reports show no alcohol or drugs were detected in any of the three passengers: 18-year old Kimberly Shafer, 17-year old Lindsey Sholar, and 19-year old Dalton McDougal.
All four died Saturday morning, December 8th, 2012, when the van, that was being driven by Shoaf, slammed into a 9300 four-wheel drive John Deere Tractor, near Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, on Highway 274-Rockcastle Road. The tractor, owned by Vinson Farms, was being driven by 58-year old Earl Calhoun, who was not injured in the wreck.
Vinson says due to the results of the toxicology tests, alcohol and drugs will be listed as a major contributing factor in the wreck.
Kentucky State Police Post One Spokesman Jay Thomas says investigators are still awaiting toxicology results from the Kentucky State Police Crime Lab, but based on the Coroner's test results he expects alcohol and drugs will be listed as the major contributing factors. He added that State Police are also awaiting toxicology results from the driver of the tractor, Earl Calhoun, but do not expect those tests to show any drug or alcohol use. He says once they receive their results, the criminal case will likely be closed because the driver of the van, David Shoaf is deceased.
