Area Districts Fail To Provide Information

State Auditor Adam Edelen Wednesday unveiled a public database and released a report concerning special districts, both taxing and non-taxing across the state. Edelen's report brought to light the revenues and expenditures of these entities, which previously had not been available for public review. During an exclusive News Edge interview, Edelen spoke about why he thought it was important for this information to be available.

In Trigg County, there are a total of thirteen special districts, with eight of those being taxing districts. The largest special district in Trigg County is the Barkley Lake Water District, which is a non-taxing district, and reported just over 7.9-million dollars in receipts.

Several of the Trigg County special districts did not comply with the Auditor's request for information. The Linton Volunteer Fire Department, Montgomery Volunteer Fire Department, Trigg County Ambulance District, Trigg County Health Department, Trigg County Hospital Taxing District, and Trigg County Tourism Commission are the agencies listed in Trigg County that did not supply the requested information to the Auditor's office.

Of those agencies, Linton Volunteer Fire Department, Montgomery Volunteer Fire Department, Trigg County Ambulance District, Trigg County Health Department, and the Trigg County Hospital Taxing District are all taxing entities.

In Christian County, there are a total of nineteen special districts, with thirteen of those being taxing districts. The largest special district in Christian County is the Pennyrile Area Development District with nearly 26.2-million dollars in receipts. Pennyroyal Mental Health Center is a close second with nearly 25.1-million dollars. Both are non-taxing special districts.

The Christian County special districts that did not comply with the Auditor's request for information were the Christian County Rescue Team, Christian County Tourism Commission, Christian County Water District, Honey Grove Volunteer Fire Department, Hopkinsville-Christian County Air Board, Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library, Northwest Volunteer Fire Department, Oak Grove Volunteer Department, and Westside Volunteer Fire Department.

Of those districts, Christian County Rescue Team, Honey Grove Volunteer Fire Department, Hopkinsville-Christian County Air Board, Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library, Northwest Volunteer Fire Department, Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department, and the Westside Volunteer Fire Department are taxing districts.

Now that the information has been gathered, Edelen talked about what is next for the Auditor's office in this process.

The Auditor added that he would like for any legislation to contain enforcement measures to force the districts to comply with providing the information that is being requested by the Auditor's office.
