Great Turnout For Jeffers Bend Take A Kid Fishing Day

It was perfect weather for the annual Take a Kid Fishing Day at the Jeffers Bend Environmental Center in Hopkinsville Saturday morning.

Hundreds and hundreds of kids come out for this event each year. Pennyrile Resource Conservation and Development Coordinator and volunteer, Charles Turner tells the News Edge the event started in 1999 with about 200 people and the most they have had is about 1,650. He says they started the event after improvements to the rivers and to give kids an opportunity to fish.

He notes this is a family event for all ages.Years ago it was unheard of, but fishing teams are now part of collegiate sports. A 2018 Murray State University graduate, Mitchell Forte, who was on the collegiate fishing team, was also at the event and talked about his experiences and competing on the national level next week in Maryland.
