Marshall County High School has been awarded a Project School Emergency Response to Violence (SERV) grant for more than $138,000 to assist with recovery efforts and further student support efforts after the deadly shooting that claimed the lives of two students earlier this year. Governor Matt Bevin and U.S. Secretary Education Betsy DeVos made the announcement Friday.

A release says Project SERV provides critical support to school districts and institutions of higher education that have experienced a significant traumatic event in which the learning environment has been disrupted. Officials say the funds are available for costs that are reasonable, necessary, and essential for activities that are intended to restore a sense of safety and security in the school and help the victims and students stabilize their lives.

Under the direction of Governor Matt Bevin, the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet worked closely with the Marshall County Board of Education and the local community to identify needs with the high school that qualify for SERV funding. Officials indicate the initial allocation of $138,213 provided to the Department of Education will go towards additional staffing support for the school.
