New Immunization Law Presents Challenges For CCPS

The Christian County School District is facing some challenges now that a new state immunization law is in effect that requires documentation showing students have received mandatory vaccinations before being allowed to attend school.

Nurse Supervisor Megan Kidd says the state immunization law now requires students to have two types of immunizations.

Director of Pupil Personnel Melanie Barrett says parents will need to provide an immunization certificate on the day of enrollment.

She adds the district has made notification efforts by sending letters to the parents or guardians. Barrett notes the letters are also on the district’s website. Board members also discussed other ways to make sure parents and guardians are notified and that students are compliant.

Under the state law, Barrett went on to say the district will continue to review options regarding noncompliance of the immunization requirements and the district’s goals.

School board attorney, Jack Lackey, Jr. says it’s going to be a balancing act with the immunization requirements and noncompliance of the state law.

In addition, Kidd says they are looking into other options to help students be compliant with the new law by possibly having the Christian County Health Department do on-site locations vaccinations as long as parents are willing or present.

Board members also discussed and unanimously approved several agenda items including Director of Transportation Mike Brumley’s request to purchase two 78 passenger buses and two 72 passenger buses for a total cost of $403,000; An interior remodeling project for a secure entrance at  Millbrooke Elementary for a cost of $23,110; And, an interior remodeling project for s secure entrance at Indian Hills Elementary with a price tag of $30,110.  JKS Architecture was approved as the design firm for both projects.
