Man Charged With Controlled Substance Possession

A Hopkinsville man is facing charges in Logan County after authorities say he was acting suspicious as he approached the fatal accident reconstruction scene on US 68 in which a college coach was killed and three other bicyclists were injured.

The Logan County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy was enroute to the assist other deputies on the scene shortly before 3:00 Sunday afternoon when he observed a male, later identified as 56-year old Martin Smith, driving a vehicle approaching Rodney Lane. After observing the deputies ahead with the emergency lights activated on the shoulder of the road, deputies report Smith made an evasive maneuver with the vehicle and immediately pulled to the shoulder of the road and swapped positions with his wife, Geraldine Smith.

According to the report, a deputy initiated a traffic stop and found that his license were suspended out of Christian County for a previous DUI. During a search incident to arrest, a Hydrocodone pill wrapped in a clear plastic wrapping form a box of cigarettes was reportedly found in his pocket. Deputies say Smith could identify everything in his pocket but advised deputies he did not know how or when the pill got into his pocket.

Smith was lodged in the Logan County Jail charged with Driving on a DUI Suspended License, Prescription Controlled Substance Not In Proper Container, and 1st Degree Possession of Controlled Substance (Drug Unspecified).
