Former Hopkinsville Mayor Wally Bryan says he offered Mayor Carter Hendricks a job to launch the SportsPlex, if he would drop out of the mayor’s race.

Bryan, who is running as an Independent in the November General Election, called a news conference Tuesday and Wednesday and shared several private email exchanges between him and Mayor Hendricks regarding the two meeting to discuss fiscal responsibility on spending. He says the SportsPlex will not help the kids in communities like the one where he held the news conferences on Bryan Street, and that’s one of the reasons he offered Mayor Hendricks a job.

Bryan adds he will do his best to keep the SportsPlex from losing money, as well as reduce the losses at the Water Park. He also referenced Mayor Hendricks heart attack and said he “was not surprised.” However, after the SportsPlex job offer, Mayor Hendricks refused to meet with him, and responded by saying he “would not drop out of the race or accept a job offer to do so.”

Bryan says he does not feel his job offer to Mayor Hendricks to drop out of the race violates any ethics laws because he has always meant for it to be public.
In one of the first emails Bryan sent to Mayor Hendricks earlier this month, Bryan wanted to meet in order for them to discuss “excessive spending” on projects, including “the Woodmill Road Park, the 5.8 million dollar SportsPlex, as well as “Local Campaign Finance Reform”. Mayor Hendricks told the News Edge his decision to not meet with Bryan was due to some personal concerns over the email correspondence he had been sending him, adding that he will run a positive campaign.
