Police say a Madisonville man was charged with assaulting his estranged girlfriend after he broke into her residence Tuesday afternoon and barricaded himself inside her home for more than three hours.
According to Madisonville Police, officers responded to a report that 23-year old Travis Camplin had forced the window of 21-year old Lexsey Bernal’s residence on Silkwood Avenue and held her against a will and hit her multiple times with a handgun. During this time, the couple’s two children then have in common were reportedly in the room with them. Eventually, Bernal was able to escape and call 911.
At that time, police say Camplin barricaded himself inside the residence along with the children. The police department’s Emergency Response Team arrived at the scene and rescued the children, but Camplin would not surrender. Officers deployed a chemical agent and after a three hour stand-off, the response team entered the home and found Camplin in the attic where he was arrested without further incident.
Camplin was booked into the Hopkins County Jail charged with 2nd Degree Assault, 1st Degree Wanton Endangerment, 1st Degree Unlawful Imprisonment, 1st Degree Criminal Abuse – 12 or Under, Resisting Arrest, and 1st Degree Burglary.
