Differences on how to improve the Christian Circuit Court Clerk’s office were seen during Tuesday night’s debate between the two Democrats running for the position. While both say they want to use the position to serve, each had their own idea of how to go about it.

Paige Eli Parker, who has servied as a Deputy Circuit Court Clerk, says the office needs capable leadership, something she can deliver on.

Trent Haddock says he feels it is his calling to serve people through that office. He adds his time working first for the Administrative Office of the Courts, and later in Probation and Parole, qualifies him for the position.

The passing of the state-required test was a point of difference in the debate. Parker says she passed on the first try, while Haddock says he passed on his third attempt. He cited it as an example of the persistence he would bring with him.

As for what changes the candidates would make, Haddock says most major decisions aren’t made by the clerk but rather by AOC. However, he says if elected he would advocate for staff increases to reduce wait times associated with driver’s licenses.

Parker says she would instead cross-train all deputy clerks so they would be able to better serve people as they come in.
